The thought of jumping into the car and hitting the long
road to an unclear destination, with only a backpack and a company of great
friends has topped the bucket lists of several people for generations. The
attraction of the far-flung destinations in the darkest corners of a country is
stronger than anything, but Uganda is simply a hub to some of the most
beautiful hidden treasures.
From the beautiful and fun filled city of Kampala to the
long lonely road through the thick Mabira forest to eastern Uganda, then directly
through the eastern hills to the Karamoja region in north eastern Uganda. Or
driving through the Kigezi hills to western Uganda, the land that holds the
country’s great wonders.
Destinations are not defined as the best places to go to
because of the wonderful time you spend exploring them, but rather because of the
memorable stops all the journey. Below we have rounded up the 5 epic road trips
with breathtaking stops in Uganda that every adventurous traveler would want to
try.
Road trip to Northern Uganda. It takes you to various
destinations awarding you with spectacular views of the beautiful landscape
displaying on the sides of Luwero- Gulu road. Then hit the bridge that crosses
the powerful Karuma falls. Note that on the way to the north, travelers can
still have a short stop over at Zziwa Rhino sanctuary for the white rhino
tracking and then proceed. Simply the journey to northern Uganda, is another
experience with in the trip. Visit the Aruu falls, the virgin falls that have
not yet been visited by many plus other simple stops like the Gulu town, Fort
Partico and the world’s smallest church plus so many others.
Road trip to see the gorillas in Uganda. Uganda is famously
known for its gigantic giants of the forests, the mountain gorillas in Bwindi impenetrable
forest national park and Mgahinga national park in south western Uganda. A
journey to see the endangered mountain gorillas comes with amounts of other
small amazing experiences like the equator crossing, Lake Mburo national park,
Mbarara city tour and spectacular views of the kigezi and Kabale hills. Some
trotters also choose to stop over at Queen Elizabeth national park for the tree
climbing lions and Lake Bunyonyi the second deepest lake in Africa.
Road trip through Buganda Kingdom. Located in the central
region of Uganda, Buganda kingdom is the largest traditional kingdom covering
eleven districts including Uganda’s capital Kampala. It also comprises of
Wakiso, Mukono, Mityana, Ssembabule, Rakai, Masaka, Luwero, Kalangala, Mubende
and Mpigi. Road tripping through Buganda furnishes the best way to explore the
kingdom’s interesting history, natural beauty, refreshing and cutting edge
traditional and cultural attraction. It would start with a city tour in
Kampala; Uganda’s capital, proceed to Entebbe in Wakiso. Also see the equator
in Kayabwe along Kampala to Masaka road plus several other attractions like
Mpanga forest reserve, Mabamba bay wetland, Kasubi tombs among others.
Road trip to Eastern Uganda. Part of Eastern Uganda; Jinja
town is also dubbed the adventure capital of East Africa. This road trip takes
you to Jinja via Ssezibwa falls and Mabira forest; the once largest tropical
forest of Uganda, the huge tea estates that were only common to the Canadian
prairies. Finally a trip around Jinja the proud home of the source of the Nile River,
the second longest river in the world, flowing through more than four African
countries. The trip also proceeds Mbale town, the land of the Bagisu and home
of the great Elgon volcano.
Road trip to the west. This has two routes, so it would be a
round trip, going through one route and coming back from a different one. What
better road trip than a cycle trip. Most tourists go through the Kampala Masaka
Mbarara road, via the equator, Lake Mburo national park, Igongo Cultural
centre, Queen Elizabeth national park and the crater lakes of Western Uganda.
Then proceed to Kibale national park for the chimpanzees, Fort portal town for
Amabere caves, Tooro palace, Karambi tmbs and others. On the way back via
Mubende Kampala road, have beautiful views of the large tea estates and a stop
at the mysterious Nakayima tree.
Indeed, road tripping is the best way to explore the amazing
wonders of the pearl of Africa.
