Mgahinga national park is popularly known for being the only
destination in Uganda where the silver meets the gold. This is the only place
where tourists on Uganda safaris can
both trek the mountain gorillas and the golden
monkeys. Even though different trails lead to different species, but still
the fact is that both the silverbacks and the golden monkeys dwell comfortably in
Mgahinga national park.
Trekking through Mgahinga is undoubtedly one of the best
ways to explore a whole trove of nature that the park hides, with all its
smallest insights without any limitations and confines of the vehicle. Walking
through the thick forest with slippery slopes, walking past waterfalls, swamps
and countless wildlife species like the duikers, baboons, elephants, bushbucks
and the giant forest hogs plus so many others.
Mgahinga national park management has created and maintain a
number of nature walk trails that you would explore a different one on each
visit. The Batwa trail, Border trail, hiking to the visitors’ information
center, plus the mountain gorilla and golden monkey trekking trails, all
offering unique experiences and end destinations.
However, a nature walk in Mgahinga national park that goes
through the Sabinyo gorge trail is one that is exceptional. Walking through
different vegetation zones all the way to the gorge, on slippery grounds with
only the walking stick as your left support, having to hold onto tree branches
for support to jump over the other side is all something else, simply got from
the gorge walk in Mgahinga national park.
This is the most challenging trail in Mgahinga national park.
It is very strenuous enjoyable hike that rewards the trekkers with views of the
Bwindi impenetrable forest, Virunga
volcanoes, and the neighboring communities.
Still the gorge trail is the best birding trail where
travelers spot a wide array of bird species
like the Rwenzori Turaco, white necked raven, ibis, grey capped warbler,
waxbills, pin –tailed whydah, paradise flycatcher, yellow vented bulbul, olive
pigeon, Rwenzori nightjar, pin tailed whydah, black kite, speckled mouse birds
and olive woodpecker among others.
Hiking through the gorge trail starts in the bamboo forests,
heading to the thicker forest that harbors a number of birds and several
wildlife species. Walk on the ridges and bridges that have been constructed to
help in crossing over water streams and swamps, a surplus experience that is
always not budgeted for on Uganda hiking safaris.
This walk takes about 5-6 hours wandering through the lower
slopes of mountain Sabinyo, through
different vegetation zones. Hikers are advised to take enough drinking water,
hiking boots, rain quotes and energy giving snacks.
Note that, besides nature walks in Mgahinga national park,
tourists to the park can still engage in mountain
gorilla trekking, golden monkey
trekking, birding, Batwa cultural
encounter and several other activities. It’s one park that can never fail
any adventurous traveler.
